CNN —Brittney Griner feared that her plane would be shot down after she was released from detention in Russia, the WNBA star said in a new interview with The Cut. Speaking with former US soccer icon Megan Rapinoe in an interview published in The Cut on Monday, Griner recalled the moment she learned that she was being released. “I got a note underneath my door that said, ‘Be ready at midnight,’ or some late, crazy hour,” she said. I was worried someone might shoot the plane down. The US State Department, however, deemed that Griner had been wrongfully detained, and she was released in December 2022 in a prisoner swap involving Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

A string of buoys in the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas, has largely failed to deter migrants from entering the U.S. Photo: Suzanne Cordeiro/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesA federal appeals court has ordered the state of Texas to remove a 1,000-foot floating barrier deployed in the Rio Grande to block migrants from crossing the border illegally. A three-judge panel of the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 Friday to reinstate a lower court’s ruling that the barrier illegally blocked the river and should be taken out of the water.

A new estimate says the record summer heat in Texas cost the state's economy $24 billion. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Lone Star State's punishing and record-breaking heat wave, coupled with an unyielding drought, significantly affected local businesses and, by extension, the state's economy. For every 1-degree increase in average summer temperature, Texas sees a 0.4% slowdown in its annual nominal GDP growth. Notable establishments like Schlitterbahn, SeaWorld, and Six Flags blamed their dips in summer visitors on the heat wave. AdvertisementAdvertisementOne brewery owner in Austin told My San Antonio that the summer heat "crushed" the city as several local breweries were forced to close their doors.

Abbott plans to appeal a federal judge's order to remove a Rio Grande barrier. The judge ruled Texas must get rid of the floating barrier by Sept. 15 — and pay for its removal. Greg Abbott said he'd appeal the decision — and wouldn't get rid of the floating barrier unless SCOTUS tells him to. "Governor Abbott announced that he was not 'asking for permission' for Operation Lone Star, the anti-immigration program under which Texas constructed the floating barrier. "Thus, we intend to seek appropriate legal remedies, which may include seeking injunctive relief requiring the removal of obstructions or other structures in the Rio Grande River."

A long-awaited rally in crude oil prices has helped the Club's three oil-and-gas companies become some of our top-performing stocks over the past month. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, and West Texas Intermediate crude, the U.S. oil standard, have both climbed by more than 10% since late June. Energy stocks linked to crude — including Club names Halliburton (HAL), Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) — have risen on oil's fortunes. U.S. producers also have shown restraint, Kumar told CNBC, with domestic crude production hovering around 12.3 million barrels per day all year . Moreover, a year-over-year drop in U.S. rig counts points to "a bit of a decline in oil production" down the road, Kumar said.
